Ontario IC&I Waste Diversion Worsens

According to an Ontario Auditor General's 2010 Annual Report " Based on the latest information available at the time of our audit, the combined diversion rate of waste generated by the residential and industrial, commercial, and institutional (IC&I) sectors was about 24%. "
Residential waste diversion has increased from 2004. The IC&I sectors (under provincial jurisdiction) actually worsened. B.C. and Nova Scotia both have much higher IC&I waste diversion rates. They both also have legislation prohibiting the landfilling of recycleable materials. Could it be this simple?

That's what I'm talking about! Using old jeans for the soundproofing of cars instead of landfilling. This is the kind of thinking we all need to be doing. The company that demonstrates this shows sustainable direction and good marketing. I suddenly like Ford a little more.

Waste Reduction Week in Ontario

Waste Reduction Week is coming (Oct.18th to 24th/10) . Instead of London Ontario celebrating the commencement of a pilot green bin program, we have seen the plan digress into a pre-municipal elections topic. How unfortunate that we are land filling reclaimable resources even longer. Eventually a local processor will be found but in the meantime we could iron out bugs during the pilot period. The material trucked to Arthur Ontario(about 2 tonnes per 9 day collection cycle) is being processed there, not land filled.

This is another reason that the burden of cost for the recycling of a container must be carried by those making the money off the sale of the product. Why doesn't the same trucks that deliver the product pick up the recycleable container?

You're probably familiar with gas/electric hybrids like the Toyota Prius. Though gas/electric hybrids are popular and offer a good way to increase fuel economy and cut back on pollution, they're not perfect (we'll talk about their shortcomings on the next page). Another hybrid option has been put forth and tested by a number of businesses, as well as the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA): hydraulic hybrids. Hydraulic hybrids use many of the same principles as electric hybrids, but instead of using potentially pollutive (and heavy) batteries, they use lightweight components and clean fluid to power the vehicle while it's at slow speeds.

New Solar Energy Technology Collects 10x More Energy

Ultra-thin solar cells can absorb sunlight more efficiently than the thicker, more expensive-to-make silicon cells used today, because light behaves differently at scales around a nanometer (a billionth of a meter), say Stanford engineers. They calculate that by properly configuring the thicknesses of several thin layers of films, an organic polymer thin film could absorb as much as 10 times more energy from sunlight than was thought possible.
